group of antsOne of the most common pests that can be found in nearly every Coral Springs and surrounding area home is ants. These creepy crawly critters seem to be around not matter the time of day. They are one of the most difficult pests to control, simply because there are usually multiple colonies near your home and they consist of thousands of ants. Of course, the reason that ants are nearby is because they are constantly searching for food and water. And there’s no better shopping mall than your home.

If you’re not familiar with the history of ants, there is much to learn. Some of the insights might surprise you. Check out some of these facts.

Ant colonies consist of ants that serve one of four key roles. There’s one queen who is solely responsible for reproducing. Then you have workers, males, and soldiers who are responsible for protecting the colony as well as gathering food and supplying the colony with anything else that is needed.

Believe it or not, ants are closely related to wasps and have lived on this planet for more than 130 million years. Scientists believe they evolved from their flying relatives. And if you’ve ever examined the body of a wasp, you’ve probably noticed that they look like big ants.

Next, ants especially love nice hot and humid environments like the one here in South Florida. But ants live on every continent, except for Antarctica. And while you may be able to rattle of the names of 5 or 10 species of ants, in reality it is estimated that there are over 22,000 ant species with only 12,000 species identified so far. I’ll bet that blows your mind, huh?

Now, you’ve probably heard that ants are strong and you may have even observed them dragging large crumbs across your kitchen floor or patio. But you ain’t seen nothing yet. Some ants can carry objects that are fifty times their body weight. That’s the equivalent of you being able to lift a car over your head.

Ants are pretty swift creatures too. Once they get all 6 cylinders (legs) revved up, they can get to a hiding spot fairly quickly. Of course, because of their tiny size, it looks like they are getting no where fast in your eyes. Yet, the speed that they move is equivalent to you being able to run as fast as a Kentucky Derby racehorse.

Another thing about ants that might shock you is that there are more than 1.5 million ants for every person on the planet. Now, if you haven’t fully caught on as to what this means, hold on to your hat because I’m about to tell you. It means that the biomass of all of the ants on the planet is greater than that of all humans combined.

Finally, most ants come in the colors and shades of black or red. However, you could come across green ants or some with a brownish metallic looking luster.
